Short Answer

1. * Turning on a computer that has been powered off completely, It's performing a cold boot. A warm boot, by contrast, is the process of using the operating system to restart a computer.
    * The kernel is memory resident, which means it remains in memory while the computer is running. Other parts of the operating system are nonresident, these instructions remain on a storage medium until they are needed.

2. * A user interface controls how to enter data and instructions and how information is displayed on the screen.
    * With a Graphical User Interface ( GUI ), users interact with menus and visual images such as buttons and other graphical objects to issue commands. While configure devices, manage system resources, and troubleshoot network connections, network administrators and other advanced users work with a command-line interface.

3. * With Windows Update, users can download and install operating system and utility updates. It also can become a fixer of program bugs or errors, enhancements to security, modifications to device drivers, access to new or expanded components such as desktop themes, or even update applications software in the computer.
    * Many software makers provide a free downloadable update to users who have registered and/or activated software.

4. * During the back-up process, the utility monitors progress and alerts users of an optional if users want to add another disc or not.
    * The purpose of a restore utility is to reserve the backup process and return backed up files to their original form.

5. * Four embedded operating systems :
     - Windows CE => an operating system developed by Microsoft for embedded system.
Optimized of devices that have minimal storage.
     - iOS => a mobile operating system developed and distributed by Apple Inc.
     - Palm OS => a mobile operating system initially developed by Palm, Inc., for personal digital assistants ( PDAs ) in 1996.
     - MS-DOS => an operating system for x86-based personal computers. It was the most commonly used member of the DOS family of operating system.
     - Inferno => a distributed operating system started at Bell Labs, but is now developed and maintained by Vita Nuova Holdings as free software.

    * The uses :
     - Windows CE => Windows CE kernel may run in under a megabyte of memory. Devices are often configured without disk storage, and may be configured as a closed system that does not allow for end-user extension.
     - iOS => extended to support other Apple devices such as the iPad and Apple TV.
     - Palm OS => designed for ease of use with a touchscreen-based graphical user interface.
     - MS-DOS => the most commonly used member of the DOS family of operating systems, and was the main operating system for IBM PC compatible personal computers during the 1980s to the mid 1990s.
     - Inferno => based on the experience gained with Plan 9 from Bell Labs, and the further research of Bell Labs into operating systems, languages, on-the-fly compilers, graphics, security, networking and portability.
